Would You Want To Know When You’re Going To Die?

I was out at a networking event and a friend asked me, “Would you want to know when you’re going to die? And if your answer is yes, what would you do differently in your life now that you know?”

My answer was Yes, I would want to know. What would I do differently? As Steve Jobs said:

“Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure — these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.”

  1. You are already naked. There is no reason to not follow your heart.

    I love this and yet, I would not want to know. I would want to think – truly believe – that I am living a life that confronts challenges, pushes me to new heights and that is elevating me forward. To think that an end date would change my personal and professional pursuits would make me feel that I am limiting myself and my potential.

  2. I like the mystery of NOT knowing. All I need to know is that it is certain I will die. Each day should be lived as if it was the last day.
